Since the car buying season has kicked off to a good start I thought it would be a good idea to toss out some suggestions to new and used car buyers on how to get the most bang for your buck on your trade-in.
Follow these 5 tips to get the most for your trade-in
- Have all of your personal stuff out of the vehicle and ready to be traded. (Extras such as tissue boxes and cd holders, seat covers, child seats, aftermarket stereos and sub systems) This lets the dealer know that you are 100% serious about trading this vehicle.
- Ensure the vehicle is up to snuff on repairs, tires are at least 50%, mainteance is up to date and the vehicle is clean and ready to be transfered.
- If you own the vehicle have the title IN HAND and ready to sign over. This also lets the dealer know you are a serious player and ready to make a trade. (Dealers love clear and ready titles!)
- Be sure you know what your vehicle is worth not only to the dealer and the market but also YOU. Just because the dealer shoots you a price on the car and says "well we can give you $5000 for it" DOES NOT mean that is what you have to take for it. This is a TWO way street.

Sounds like a great deal doesn't it. Have you done it?
Here is how it is really done...
Like most auto dealership commercials the whole commercial is really just a gemmick to get you in the dealerships' doors, but here is the gist of what happens when you get on the lot...
- You automaticlly look up on KBB to see what your car is worth and go by what you feel is Excellent, Good, Fair & Poor appraisal for your trade, then you print it out and take it with you.
- You get to the dealer and pick out your vehicle that you have been researching. You are settled on a price and head inside for the paperwork and finalizing of the deal.
- The news is broke to you that your trade-in is only worth the appraised amount (even less) because you have not choosen to purchase one of the "approved vehicles" for the trade-in allowance package.
- You say OK what can I do to get the most from my trade. The dealer is not going to budge on their policy and you cannot afford the vehicles that are on the trade-in allowance bargain list.
- You take what they will give you for your vehicle and go forward with your purchase of the vehicle you want.
What really happened here? Was it legal? What is "bait & switch"? Was it trickery?
Yes to all of the above in a consumers' eyes and these types of offers should not even be allowed without full disclosure in the commercial. Well although our favorite car and team had some problems Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway we still had a blast!
Amy celebrated her 40th birthday watching 43 (well I guess by 1/4 of the race was over it was 38) stock cars going in circles and making her dizzy but she still enjoyed the atmosphere. There is just something about short track NASCAR style that just brings out the competive spirit in us all. By the end of the race she was asking all sorts of questions via text message, because we could not hear eachother. After the race we sat in traffic for over an hour JUST TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE PARKING LOT) but we had fun making fun of the other fans that were in a huge hurry and not taking their turns in line.

Thinking about purchasing a used car? Wondering when the best time of the season or year is to purchase a used car? Have you been hearing all the commercials on the radio and seeing them on the TV about the specials going on right now? Probably so, but hold off just a bit longer to get the best deal.
The best deals on new cars come at the end of the year and even sometimes (depending on the market) at the begining of the year.
Here is how to score a great deal on a BRAND NEW car that is just a year old.
Dealerships normally will hang on to a vehicle for about 90 days before they start to get real antsy to move it off the lot. You see after that 90 day mark most dealership have to start paying BIG interest on the vehicles they have financed through their banks. FINANCED YOU SAY? Yes, even dealership have to finance their cars. Most finance through what is called a "floor plan". This simply put is just like a home equity line of credit.
So when is the best time to hit a dealer up on a good deal?
First: Know which vehicle you want and how much you are willing to pay for it. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Second: If the vehicle you are choosing is not going to be made anymore you are more likely to pay more for it.
Third: Dealers drasticlly reduce prices and manufactures start tossing rebates at the end of the year. Do not be fooled by the summer clearence events. They are just a coy for the suckers, but after reading our blog you have become a smart car buyer and know that December and January are the best times to purchase a new car.
Now you know when to shop there is a small disclaimer that must be made - if you wait too long, you might not be able to find the vehicle and the options you are looking for.
Here is how to get around that too:
Visit a dealership of your choice and speak with one of the sale people that has been there for some time, if you don't know just ask. Let him or her know what type of car you are looking for (vehicle model, color, options, trim package ect.) Let him or her know when you think you will be ready to buy (December or January). A good sales person will put this in their calender and they will locate and call you when they have one in stock.
Once that New Year mark hits dealers are scrambling to move the previous year's inventory off the lot. 1 they do not want to pay fees on it. 2 they flat out don't have the room for them on the lot!
